I have borrowed a dress from my sister but it is slightly big at the waist, I want to have it taken in a bit temporarily without damaging it. Does anyone know if this is possible?

you could always put a belt around your waist! t would look something like this: http://pics.hoobly.com/full/3H4LMW9SMKE5Y8MMP2.jpg
that way, you wouldn’t be exactly making any changes to the dress at all.. except for the waist bit
pleat it at the waist and secure it with a few stitches, and when you have finished with it, carefully unpick the stitches.
Using safety pins on the inside should help, but it depends on what type of material. If it’s Satin, Silk or anything delicate I wouldn’t recommend it, but cotton should be okay.
I think a better idea is to not touch the dress but wear something over it, e.g. a waist belt! Or even using a ribbon around and tying it at the back looks cute.
Find a matching brooch and pull the loose bits at the side together as well as you can and pin them together. If you can’t find or afford a brooch, and a belt will match, try that. If a satin ribbon would look nicer, you can do that as well. If all else fails, find a safety pin and do the brooch trick on the inside of the dress, where the bobby pin will be much less noticeable, and if you still feel uncomfortable, wear a matching jacket or cardigan.
wear a belt round the waist to bring it in a little bit
no
Your best bet would be to take it to a tailor
