How Do You Erase an Old Cell Phone When Traded For Upgrade?

I read somewhere that everything input to a cell phone is recorded somewhere on a memory chip or similar technology. I am wondering if there is anyway to completely erase any and all possible info that might be help in the phone, for instance if it is sold on ebay or collected from service provider traded in for an upgrade

There are also references to locking and unlocking security codes on cell phones. Can someone recommend a link to learn more about this topic?

This is similar to completely formatting or erasing a hard drive if you sold a computer.

Depending on the phone you can go into the security settings and restore the phone to the default or it may say erase all. Go into your phone and look on the phone settings. It will ask a security code but that is usually the last 4 digits of the phone#
